Nelson retains title
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
By ANDY FLORA - Special to The Frankin News-Post

Sgt. Jim Nelson retained his Universal Heavyweight Championship overcoming the odds against him as American Championship Wrestling (ACW) returned to Rocky Mount National Guard Armory. Saturday.

In the main event, Nelson faced Rolling Thunder, who had challenged Nelson for the title after scoring a recent pinfall victory over the mat veteran.

The ACW commissioner appointed a special referee for the matchup to maintain law and order during the bout.

Pro wrestling legend Ricky (The Dragon) Steamboat was first contacted to referee this important championship match, but previous commitments kept him from accepting the appointment.

"The Legendary" Eclipso, with some monetary backing from his manager Douglas J Wentworth, III Esq., convinced the commissioner to allow his charger to oversee the title match.

"I want you to sit back and learn something," Eclipso told regular referee, Ric Petty, before the match.

Petty became the referee in charge of any action that spilled outside of the ring.

The action went back and forth before Wentworth jumped on the ring apron to complain to referee Eclipso about Nelson's signature cobra clutch being a choke hold.

Eclipso declared to Nelson to break the hold.

Then, the sergeant used the distraction to whip Thunder into Eclispo who then hit heads with Wentworth knocking both to the ground.

Nelson took advantage of a dazed Thunder once again slapping the cobra clutch on the challenger. As Thunder fell to the mat, the effects of the devastating hold forced his shoulders the mat in a pinning situation.

Outside referee Petty took charge of the match since guest referee Eclispo was incapacitated counting to three giving Nelson the win.

"Nelson, you have been dodging me since I lost that belt over a year ago, Eclipso said. "November 1, right here in Rocky Mount, give me another shot at the title.'

"When I won this belt, the stipulation was that you (Eclipso) would never get another title shot. If the commissioner approves it, I will see you on Nov. 1," Nelson said.

In other action:

"Universal Tag Team Champions "Dirty Deeds" Eddie Loco and Robbie Lynn retained the championship by defeating "Team USA" Scott Weddle and Foxy Rocky by disqualification.

After "Team USA" dominated much of the match, a frustrated Lynn went for a chair under the ring to take control.

As Lynn went to hit Roxy, he noticed the referee turning to catch him with the chair. Since Lynn's team would lose the belts on a disqualification, a match stipulation, a crafty Lynn tossed the chair to Roxy and faked being pummeled with the steel.

The referee seeing the chair in Roxy's possession and noticing a "knocked out" Lynn on the mat, declared "Dirty Deeds" the winners.

"In a lumber jack match, Eclipso and Ken Steel with Wentworth defeated hometown favorites "Big Yella" Jeff Holland and Mr. Jamie Wright when Rolling Thunder, a lumberjack outside of the ring, caught Holland with a right hand during a pin attempt.

"Holland, who needed help back to the dressing room after the match, later discovered Thunder delivered the punch with the help of brass knuckles.

"In an exciting "Scramble Rules" match, Franklin County's own, Hillbilly Helbert retained his Universal Television Championship over Col. Spud Wade and Scotty Blaze.

During this 15-minute match, pin falls can occur as many times as possible, but the competitor who scored the last pin fall after the 15 minutes expired would be declared the champion.

During the match, there were as many as 10 pin falls with the championship going back and forth between the wrestlers.

With less than a minute remaining, Wade tossed Helbert to the outside of the ring and landed a devastating bulldog on a dazed Blazed.

As the referee was lowering his hand for the count of three and an apparent win for Wade, Helbert pulled Wade off of the pinned Blaze as the bell sounded to end the match allowing Hillbilly to retain his championship.

This is the second time Wade had been denied the championship from Helbert and he has promised revenge the next time these two meet.

"Damien James defeated Scott Lee with a splash from the second rope.

"Robbie Lynn defeated Ace England by pinfall.

Blaze survives and wins ACW main event

CROSSROADS -- Scotty Blaze outwitted and outplayed 15 other champions of the squared circle to win the Over the Top Power Rumble, the main event of Saturday night's American Championship Wrestling (ACW) card at the Crossroads Ruritan Club.

The outdoor event, the annual Joe Powers Memorial, was sponsored by We Care of Franklin County and the Crossroads Ruritan Club.

The main event started with two wrestlers, the Legendary Eclipso and Mr. Jamie Wright, entering the ring.

Pins were not allowed and the only way to eliminate your opponent was to throw them over the top rope.

Every two minutes, another wrestler would enter the match until all combatants had entered the ring.

To the surprise of former champion Eclipso, Wright eliminated the "Legendary One" as Wright's many fans in attendance cheered.

One by one, friends and foes eliminated each other until Franklin County's own Hillbilly Helbert and Scotty Blaze were the last men standing.

Helbert threw Blaze into the corner, climbed to the second rope, and delivered rights and lefts to Blaze's head.

Fans believed Hillbilly was on his way to certain victory when out of nowhere, Blaze grabbed Helbert by the boots and pushed him over the top rope to eliminate the country boy and capture the victory.

In other action, the stars of ACW participated in "The Power Rumble."

Teams of three were drawn at random in a winner take all tournament.

This "Russian Roulette" style of determining teams resulted in many unusual pairings.

In the first match of the tournament, the team of Eddie Loco, Scott Weddle, and Foxy Roxy defeated the team of Scott Lee, Robbie Lynn, and Damian James.

Loco and Lynn, the ACW tag team champions, had trouble working without each other.

Lynn decided to help his partner double team Lee when Loco missed Lee with a loaded boot and connected on Lynn's forehead by mistake.

While checking on his downed partner, Loco accidently laid on top of Lynn and the referee counted to three to advance Loco's team to the finals.

In the second match of the tournament, the team of Drake Tungsten, Rolling Thunder, and Helbert defeated Ace England, The Scorpion, and ACW heavyweight champion Sgt. Jim Nelson.

To score the victory, Thunder caught Nelson off guard with a spear and pinned him.

After the match, Thunder pointed out Nelson how easily he was pinned and challenged him to a championship bout at the next ACW event.

In the third match of the tournament, the team of Eclipso, escorted to the ring by Douglas J. Wentworth. III Esq, Ken Steele, and "Big Yella" Jeff Holland squared off against the team of Mr. Jamie Wright, Scotty Blaze, and Col. Spud Wade.

Both teams were disqualified after the action got out of control outside the ring and the referee declared a no contest.

In the finals of the tournament, the team of Tungsten, Thunder, and Helbert defeated Loco, Weddle, and Roxy.

Roxy and Weddle, frustrated at the way Loco was performing for their team, delivered back to back top rope moves to knock Loco unconscious.

Helbert, a spectator in the corner, walked over after the damage on Loco by his own teammates and pinned him for the tournament championship.

ACW returns to action at the Rocky Mount National Guard Armory Saturday, Oct. 4 at 8:15 p.m.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at all usual outlets.

Team Wright is victorious
Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Mr. Jamie Wright and teammates of Jeff (Big Yella) Holland and American Championship Wrestling (ACW) heavyweight champion Sgt. Jim Nelson won the feature bout of Saturday night's professional wrestling card at the Rocky Mount National Guard Armory.

In doing so, Team Wright finally put an end to the destruction Eclipso and his comrades had been laying down all summer.

In the main event, sponsored by "We Care" of Rocky Mount. Wright's team challenged the trio of Eclipso, Ken Steel, and Eclipso's manager Douglas J. Wentworth .III Esq.

Wright, who was competing in his first pro match, showed many great in-ring moves that caught the competition off guard.

Holland provided the power game while Nelson used his many years of experience to control most of the match.

Eclipso's team distracted the referee on many occasions to finally gain the upper hand.

It was easy to see that their strategy was to punish Wright ,who was thrown over the top rope twice, hit with an aluminum bat twice, and took a suplex on the concrete floor.

Wright appeared to be finished when Wentworth went for a pin.

Somehow Wright had enough intestinal fortitude to reverse Wentworth's attempt with a roll up of his own to capture the victory.

Eclipso was shocked by the result -- he could not believe the rookie got the victory.

"Wright, you got lucky! We will see how you feel in the morning," Eclipso shouted after the match.

Nelson, with the help of the crowd, convinced Eclipso to face Wright one-on-one in a bonus match.

But after a couple quick moves that went Wright's way, Eclipso retreated to the dressing room.

Eclipso continued to challenge Nelson for a title shot, but he might to have to go through Wright and Holland to get that wish.

In other matches:

"Franklin County's own Hillbilly Helbert captured the ACW television championship by defeating Scotty Blaze in controversial fashion.

Blaze injured his hand at the beginning of the match when he delivered a chop to Hillbilly, who forgot to take his lucky horseshoe out of his bibs before the match.

Blaze favored the hand the whole match, but gained control for a pin attempt using the ropes.

The referee counted to three for an apparent win for Blaze.

However Col Spud Wade, who was scouting at ringside, informed the referee of the illegal pin attempt.

The referee restarted the match and Helbert took advantage with a quick pin to capture the championship.

Wade took the opportunity to challenge Helbert after the match feeling that Helbert did not show him any respect.

Look for these two to clash in the future.

"Eddie Loco and Robbie Lynn retained the ACW tag team championship even though they lost to Team USA, Foxy Roxy and Scott Weddle.

Weddle went for a pin on Lynn when Loco kicked the referee to force the disqualification.

According the ACW rules, the title can not change hands on a disqualification.

"Wade defeated Rolling Thunder when he dodged a splash in the corner and reversed it to a diamond cutter to get the pin.

"Eclipso defeated Damian James by disqualification in the Silver Dollar Challenge when James used a skull he brought to the ring to smash Eclipso in the back of the head.

"Ace England defeated Darius Mackleford when England rolled Mackleford up in a small package.

ACW returns to action in the month of September at the Crossroads Ruritan Club in Ferrum.

Tickets available at all usual outlets.

Eclipso and company continue dominance
Wednesday, June 25, 2008

The Legendary Eclipso and company continued their "take no prisoners summer tour" by sweeping the 2 out of 3 falls main event of Saturday night's American Championship Wrestling (ACW) card at the Pigg River Community Center

The match started with ACW heavyweight champion Sgt. Jim Nelson and his partner, Col. Spud Wade, running into the ring and catching their opponents, Eclipso and Ken Steel, off guard.

During the melee Nelson, with adrenaline flowing, accidentally tossed Eclipso over the top rope which gave Eclipso and Steel an early, first-fall win.

The second-fall action was fast-paced. Nelson slapped on his finishing hold -- the cobra clutch in an effort to square the score.

However, Eclipso, the former champ, fell backward and took Nelson down with him to the mat.

Both wrestlers had their shoulders pinned as Nelson still had the cobra clutch clamped on tight..

The referee noticed both opponents had their shoulders on the mat.

During the referee's count, Eclipso bridged his shoulders off the mat before the three-count for the win.

A stunned crowd looked on as Eclipso, Steel, and manager Douglas J Wentworth, III Esq. celebrated their victory over the fan favorites.

"The blood is on your hands," Wentworth said. "We will continue to mame and maul every Rocky Mount redneck that crosses our path."

Wentworth challenge was clearly aimed at hometown heroes Jamie Wright and Jeff "Big Yella" Holland, both of whom have preformed on recent ACW cards, but were absent Saturday.

"You knew Jamie and Holland were not going to be here tonight," Nelson said to Wentworth after the match. "But Jamie will have something for you July 5 at Franklin County Speedway."

Wright, the primary target of Eclipso and company, and Holland have been at the receiving end of numerous beatings at the hands trio.

In other matches:

"The tag-team title reign of Franklin County's Hillbilly Helbert and Damien James came to an end after only two weeks.

Saturday, the duo of "Dirty Deeds" Eddie Loco and Robbie Lynn captured the championship when Loco delivered a loaded-boot kick to James for the pin.

""American Made" Scott Weddle accepted a challenge from Eclipso and defeated him by count out.

Weddle controlled so much of the contest that Eclipso and Wentworth both got frustrated and left the ring giving Weddle the count-out victory .

"Ace England continued his winning streak by defeating Rolling Thunder by disqualification.

Thunder toyed with England most of the match, but got caught by fists of fury delivered by England in the corner.

To escape, Thunder used a low blow, which was discovered by the referee, giving the victory to England.

Scotty Blaze dominated Foxy Roxy and defeated him by using an airplane spin to set up a diamond cutter.

"Tone-Up pinned the Universal television champion Daniel Ocean by using the ropes during the pin.

The pin came after the 15-minute time limit placed on the television title.

A frustrated Tone Up, who did not win the title, requested five more minutes to try to capture the belt.

Ocean granted the extended time and preceded to pound on Tone Up.

Tone Up used better judgment and left the ring shortly there after.

Saturday's wrestling event was sponsored by "We Care" of Rocky Mount and special sponsor "Star City Home Improvement" in Roanoke.

The next event sponsored once again by "We Care" will be at Franklin County Speedway Saturday, July 5th.

Tickets in advance can be purchased at all usual outlets.
